WHY 27?

Puerto 27 begins with Julio Calvo-Perez and his wife Zoila, who were both born in Lima, Peru.

Always imprinted in Julio's mind are the many enriched aromas of his childhood at his grandmother Maria Olinda's home, which was filled with ancestral spirits and youthful energy.

Grandma Maria's love and devotion to each of her thirteen grandchildren always radiated from the warmth of her kitchen. The scents and tastes of cilantro, cumin, and huacatay will be forever imprinted in Julio's mind as the essence of a perfect meal. In Maria's kitchen, Julio learned that the succulent flavors of ají amarillo, aji panca, as well as the heated spirit of the rocoto pepper and the velvety taste of the lucuma fruit would remain eternal.

While Julio was learning his way around the kitchen with his grandmother, Zoila was in Lima with her mother, Dora Garcia. Dora was extremely fond of organizing "peñas," eventually becoming the owner of one of the first "peñas criollas" - named "El Inca". A "peña" was the optimal way for the working man or woman to enjoy authentic Afro-Peruvian live music alongside a delectable home-cooked meal. Many famous musicians often came together to enjoy the soulful dishes which Dora and Zoila would prepare together. Forever imprinted in Zoila's mind is the attention to detail, the care for the ingredients, and the love and passion behind home-style cooking.

Determined to create a better life together for their family, Julio, Zoila, and their eldest son, Julito, set out to California in 1978. Their formidable immigrant experience encapsulated all the strengths of their family and their embedded appreciation for their culture and upbringing.

Today, Puerto 27 embodies all the love and tender memories rooted in the fundamentals of traditional Peruvian cooking infused with Asian, Afro-Peruvian and Californian essentials.

The number 27 is significant for the Calvo-Perez family.
